Schools are some of the least favorite places for most of us, but we would be more interested in going if there were more similar to what we see in some of our favorite anime. Here ‘s our 15 top anime that are set in high schools. The rating will be based on the high school side of the anime.
Houtaru Oreki, a 17-years-old high school student. Some call him lazy, but he prefers to identify his lazy attitude as “energy conserving.”
One day, he joins the classical literature club on his sister’s behest, after knowing the long history this club has.
To uncover the 45 years old mystery it had, as well as some side stories or “cases.” The anime is a bit slow-paced, but still intelligent.
Lets say it’s a Sherlock Holmes set in a Japanese high school.
14. Himouto Umaru-chan
Nothing is always what it seems to be. The same can be said for Umaru Doma, the golden girl of her high school, but all that changes when she gets home.
The moment she is home puts on her hamster hoodie cloak, she turns from the perfect high school girl to Umaru-chan. Umaru-chan, a snacks loving, lazy, hardcore otaku, leaving all the chores and cooking to her older brother Taihei.
A fun lighthearted story that follows the daily life of Umaru, Taihei, and their daily struggles to put up with each other’s attitudes, along with some cute and pure brotherly-sisterly love.
13. Seitokai Yakuindomo
Perversion, comedy and dirty, dark humor, so what else to ask for? After this girls’ only high school opens its doors for males for the first time, 2nd year Tsuda finds himself dragged into the school’s council by president Shino. Only to perform a “male’s point of view,” but he is surprised by the nature of the council’s members.
Shino, the president a hardworking and studious student on the outside, but a total pervert and eroticism fan that makes dirty jokes all the time on the inside.
Aria,the secretary, what looks to be your typical, sheltered rich girl cliché is even more a bigger pervert than the president. Finally, Suzu ,the treasurer, who is an honor student and a genius, but has the body of an elementary schooler. However, aware of such a thing. Class A comedy anime for all those with dirty, perverted minds.
Who didn’t laugh smile and cry while watching this anime? Tomoya Ozaki, a high school delinquent who is sick of his dull life, already convinced that he won’t achieve anything in his life.
Thus, he decides to burn away his high school days by skipping classes with his best friend Sunohara. One day, on his way to the school, he is met with Nagisa, a lovely, unique girl that caught his attention.
He starts seeing her more around school, so he decided to befriend her, to know about her illness that kept her homesick for an entire year. He decides to help her fulfill her wish by reviving the closed drama club in their high school.
Nichijou primarily focuses on the daily antics of a trio of childhood friends. Those being the high school girls Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi, and Mai Minakami. Their stories soon intertwine with the young genius Hakase Shinonome, her robot caretaker Nano, and their talking cat Sakamoto.
With every passing day, the lives of these six, as well as of the many people around them, experience both the calms of normal life and the insanity of the absurd. Walking to school, being bitten by a talking crow, spending time with friends, and watching the principal suplex a deer. Trust me, we’ve all seen that gif somehow, somewhere.
Ryuuji Takasu, a calm sweet and gentle high school student, who loves house chores and cooking.
But he has an intense face and eyes that made him look like a delinquent.
On the other hand, Taiga Aisaka, a cute doll-like girl on the outside, but a strong, violent, fierce girl.
Also nicknamed the palm tiger.
An accident makes these two cross paths, an unfaithful encounter that sends them on the confused, crazy ride of love.
Nisekoi follows the daily antics of this mismatched couple who have been forced to get along for the sake of maintaining the city’s peace. Raku Ichijou is the heir to the biggest yakuza syndicate of the city in his childhood. He promised his best friend to marry her one day, yet all he has of her is a lock shaped pendant that he gave it’s key to.
With a vast cast of characters and love interests, this anime is both colorful with a modern drawing style.
Basically one of those cute pure harem’s.If only such a thing existed.
“No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular!” Or “! Watashi ga Motenai no wa dō Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!” or just Watamote for short. Well, you got to love those long anime titles, Watamote follows the Fifteen-year-old Tomoko Kuroki.
She believes herself to be popular, having been well-versed in the world of otome games. After she gets to high school, she realizes the opposite is true, as she finds herself a loner, outside the popular circle.
She is forced to re-evaluate herself for the first time in a long while, and the series follows Tomoko through high school as she tries to improve her social standing.
7. Lucky star
Lucky star! What’s not to like about this, cute, funny anime? There lay cute moe girls, the type most people obsess over. If the anime had an official brand, it would rank as kawaii, as it should be the anime’s mascot. The daily lives of four cute high school girls—Konata Izumi, the lazy otaku; the Hiiragi twins, Tsukasa and Kagami. Not to mention the brilliant Miyuki Kara.
During the anime, they discover more about their surroundings, make plenty of jokes be it about Japanese traditions, pop culture, otaku culture, academic, or just the proper way to eat chocolate cornets.
No subject shall escape their cute, smart sense of humor.
6. Chunibyou Demo Hoi ga Shitai
Ah, that period of life. Who didn’t go through it? That 4th grade syndrome when we all think we are special. The heroes deep within, thinking they’d awaken those powers once we delve right into it. The period that makes us cringe when we think back to it.
This is what this anime is about. Yuuta Togashi is still haunted by those embarrassing moments to the point that he decides to attend a far away high school. A place where no one knows his embarrassing history.
Just so he can live a normal high school experience. That, however, doesn’t last as he meets Rikka Takanashi, a self proclaimed owner of the “Tyrant’s Eye.” She crashes into his life while all he does is kiss his ordinary life goodbye.
5. Ore Monogatari
Muscular, tall, and scary, Takeo isn’t your usual 1st year student. Behind his intimidating appearance hides a heart of gold. He is considered as a hero by the boys, for he has gentle and noble nature.
Unfortunately, these traits do not help much with his love life. As if his looks are not enough to scare the opposite sex away, Takeo’s cool and handsome best friend and constant companion Makoto Sunakawa easily steals the hearts of the female students.
That includes every girl Takeo has ever liked. When Takeo saves Rinko Yamato from being molested, he falls in love with her instantly, but assumes she would be more interested in his best friend. With his own love for Yamato continuing to bloom, Takeo unselfishly decides to help her get with him, suppressing his urge to start love story of his own.
Hachiman Hikigaya is an apathetic high school student, narcissistic with semi-nihilistic tendencies. He simply believes that a joyful youth is just an illusion, and everyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves. After writing an essay where he mocked modern social standards, Hachiman’s teacher forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club. Which is a club dedicated to help students achieve their goals and solve their problems.
With the only other club member being the beautiful, ice queen Yukino Yukinoshita, Hachiman finds himself in front of other students issues. That being a position he never knew he’d find himself in. As Hachiman and Yukino use their hidden talents to solve many of the student’s problems, will his dark view of society prove to be a gift or a tool he can use to his advantage?
3. Daily Lives of Highschool Boys
Another personal favorite is this anime. In this, the all boys Sanada school, the events follow the three friends. Those being, the eccentric ringleader with a wild imagination Hidenori, the passionate Yoshitake, and the calm and cool Tadakuni.
Their lives are filled with giant robots, true love, and intense drama. In their colorful imaginations, at least. In reality, they are just an everyday trio of ordinary guys trying to pass and kill time.
But who said everyday life couldn’t be interesting? Whether it’s an intricate RPG reenactment or an unexpected romantic encounter on the riverbank at sunset, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is rife with bizarre, yet hilariously relatable situations that are anything but mundane.
This one is a personal favorite. The great teacher Onizuka, a reformed ex-biker’s gang leader who has his sight set on an honest new goal. That is to become the world’s greatest teacher for meeting super sexy high school girls. So, partially, he is reformed. But, strict administrators and a class full of ruthless delinquents stand between Onizuka and his goal.
Ones that will use any means, however illegal or low, to drive the new teacher away. Which is good since his methods are bizarre and new, methods you won’t find in any manual.
He doesn’t care about legal or illegal means as long as they’re honest and get the job done. So, strap in for a wild ride, soaked with foul language, testosterone, and anatomy that would redefine the girl of your dreams standards. That’s what Onizuka is all about.
1. Boku wa Tomondachi ga Sukunai
The phenomenon! One of the most, if not the most popular school anime in Japan, and in the world. It all starts when Kodaka Hasegawa finds out that he will be transferring to a new school. He is determined to make a positive, good, first impression, maybe some friends, too. However, that changes when he gets labeled as a delinquent due to his blond hair and intense facial expressions, to which he inherited from his British mother and Japanese dad.
Although a month has passed, Kodaka is still alone thanks to his notorious reputation. Yet, his life begins to change when he finds a fellow loner Yozora Mikazuki talking to her imaginary friend in an empty classroom. Discovering that they’re birds of the same feather, Kodaka and Yozora decide to overcome the difficulties of making friends. Together they begin by creating the Neighbor’s Club. A club created by loners for loners. It has daily activities involve learning social skills and how to fit in, which will, hopefully, allow them to make friends. Joined by the eroge-loving Sena Kashiwazaki, other eccentric outcasts. Kodaka may finally have managed to find people he can call friends, in this club filled with hilarious oddballs.
